In this InDesign® tutorial, we will add the narration mp3 files to our fixed layout ePub project. In the past tutorial, we added the background graphic and the text to the ePub pages. Now we will add the narrative and a play button.

Interactive Button

We will also be creating our first interactive button that will play the narration of the text on the page. When the play button is clicked, the mp3 narration file is played once. If the reader moves on to anther page, the narration will stop.

As we want to give the reader the option to listen to the narration of the text, we will put the button at the beginning of the text, where it will be easily noticed. The button I am using in the example project is the common sound icon.

You should have ready one mp3 file containing the narrative text for each page. If you haven't done this, you can use a free software called Audacity.

Open your project file and let's get to work. In the example, the text of the poem starts on page 4. So, that's where we will start working. For each page, we will first place the sound file on to the page and then place the play button over the sound file icon. Finally, we will tell the play button to play the narration.

1. Open your file and select the first page of text in your ePub.


2. With the page selected in the Pages panel, click File - Place from the top menu.

Find your narration mp3 file and select it to load the file in to your cursor.


3. Click to the left and next to the first word of text.

You should see the sound file icon next to the text (see screenshot). This means that the narration file has been loaded on to the page. Let's add the play button graphic.


4. From the top menu, click File - Place and find your play button graphic.


5. Click next to the sound file icon to add the play button to the page.

We want the button to be on top of the sound icon.


6. Click and drag the play button over the top of the sound icon (see screenshot).
